Volusion: the Basics

Over 600,000 e-commerce stores have been created using the Shopify platform since its launch in 2006, resulting in $82 billion in sales. Several well-known companies, including the New York Times, Budweiser, Nestle, Tesla, and Red Bull, use Shopify.

The process of building your store with Shopify is very similar to the one with Volusion. It includes setting up your shipping, taxes, payment processing, website design, and product catalog. Additionally, you will have access to a variety of integrations and round-the-clock support.

In-house payment processing, point-of-sale systems, and shipping tools are all provided by Shopify. Not to mention the wider range of features you have access to for managing your e-commerce store.

Since Shopify is bigger and serves a wider variety of clients, it can provide more services (10% of all e-commerce stores use the Shopify platform). This does not automatically make it better than Volusion, though.

Comparison: Volusion Vs Shopify

The two platforms are very comparable in a couple of areas:

Ease of Use

You can launch your store in a single day thanks to the simple setup procedures offered by Shopify and Volusion, respectively. Both platforms give you access to a dashboard where you can oversee store operations after your store goes live. You can carry out a wide range of crucial business operations from the dashboard, including updating your store settings, adding inventory, processing orders, and viewing website analytics and performance. The theme editor, which lets you apply various designs to your website and view the changes in real-time, is a feature of both services that is especially useful.

Both Shopify and Volusion provide round-the-clock support if you experience any issues running your store.

Price

Similar pricing schemes are provided by Volusion and Shopify. Shopify offers four different plans, with prices ranging from $5 per month to $299 per month, while Volusion offers three different plans, with prices ranging from $29 to $299 per month. The more features you have access to with each service depends on the pricey plan you select. If you sign up for a more expensive plan, Volusion and Shopify will also lower your credit card processing fees. Both Volusion and Shopify provide enterprise plans with quote-based pricing.

Volusion enforces sales limits based on the plan you select, which is the one significant price difference between it and Shopify. For instance, the Personal Plan ($29 per month) subscribers are restricted to $50,000 in annual sales. They will be assessed a fee if they go over this limit. This policy is absent from Shopify.

Shopify is able to provide a lot more with its services than Volusion because it is larger.

Features

Although Volusion provides a sizable number of features on its own, it simply cannot compete with Shopify’s abundance of features. In comparison to the more than 1,500 apps in the Shopify app store, Volusion’s app store offers 19 integration opportunities. Additionally, Volusion supports 30 different payment gateways. Shopify, however, supports over 100 different payment processors. Shopify provides better value even with features that are similar. For instance, you must subscribe to Volusion’s $79 monthly plan in order to receive abandoned cart recovery. For $29 a month, Shopify offers abandoned cart recovery.

Design

The appearance and feel of your e-commerce website is another area where Shopify and Volusion differ from one another. There are more than 80 different store themes available on Shopify, nine of which are free. There are a total of 14 themes available from Volusion, but they are all free. Even so, variety makes your store appear distinctive from a branding standpoint. Additionally, each Shopify template has a set of simple settings that allow you to change every aspect of your storefront.

Each service provides the option to edit the HTML and CSS of your website, and both the Volusion and Shopify templates are responsive to mobile devices.

Where Volusion is Better

Volusion is more accommodating to merchants in one crucial area, even though Shopify has unquestionably some clear advantages.

Payment processing

All major credit cards are accepted with both Volusion and Shopify payments. It should be noted that Shopify’s POS system enables you to accept payments in person.

SEO Tools in Volusion Vs Shopify

The page title, URL, alt text, meta descriptions, 301 redirects, and other crucial SEO settings can all be customized to a great extent on Shopify. — all the stuff you’d expect to be able to change without any difficulty in a professional ecommerce solution.

When I was testing Volusion, I was mostly able to do that for my home page, but I wasn’t able to figure out how to do it for the other static pages on my store. Even so, it wasn’t as simple to do so as it was in Shopify. I could change this information for specific products.

When you change a URL, Shopify automatically creates 301 redirects for you (or prompts you to do so); with Volusion, you must go into a redirect management page and manually complete the necessary steps. Shopify also handles 301 redirects better than Volusion.

To be fair to Volusion, many other website builders handle redirects in a similar manner, but Shopify’s strategy is superior and safer from an SEO standpoint.

AMP

The Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) project, supported by Google, aims to speed up the delivery of pages on mobile devices by removing extraneous code.

Because Google gives preference to pages that load quickly and because users tend to stay on pages that load quickly for longer periods of time (increasing “dwell time,” which is also thought to help improve search rankings), SEO experts believe that AMP can have some SEO benefits.

While using AMP in Shopify is fairly simple (through the installation of a third-party app), doing so in Volusion involves some challenging coding.

GDPR Compliance in Shopify and Volusion

This section should not be taken as official legal advice because I am not an attorney.

Website owners must now adhere to quite a few new requirements when it comes to data protection and privacy following the EU’s introduction of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) laws last year.

While you can be sure that Shopify and Volusion are internally meeting those requirements—keeping transactions and data secure, etc.— — you as a customer will still have to do several things on your store to ensure you’re not in breach of GDPR rules.

While it is simple to compile the necessary paperwork (either with the help of templates or a lawyer) and display it on your website, it can be challenging to adhere to the standards for cookie banners and cookie consent.

Due to the abundance of GDPR apps in its app store (note: some are noticeably better than others! ), Shopify has an advantage here once more.), whereas there don’t seem to be any available for Volusion.

Why Choose Shopify over Volusion

Go with Shopify for these reasons:

  • Shopify offers additional dropshipping apps that cover suppliers outside of the US if you intend to dropship using suppliers based in other countries as well. suppliers based in Asia, for instance.
  • If you’re a total beginner: the issues with navigating some parts of Volusion and setting up things like a full blog are my concerns here
  • Shopify offers more features and multi-channel selling 2-way sync if you want more features or want to sell on multiple channels.

For Shopify and Volusion, that is it. Contrary to BigCommerce, both platforms are ideal for small business models. Due to its limited options, Volusion’s attempt to expand into dropshipping hasn’t been successful. Although Shopify has that business model covered, affiliate marketers and subscription e-commerce are better served by other platforms.

Before making your final decision, here are a few additional e-commerce platforms you may want to consider:

WooCommerce

Choose WooCommerce if you want to completely avoid paying for software. Any WordPress website can become an online store by using this free plugin. You also get a remarkable degree of customization with WooCommerce because it integrates with WordPress. You should be aware that WooCommerce may require a steep learning curve if you have never used WordPress before.

Big Cartel
